Stewart Island

Stewart Island is located off the southern tip of New Zealand’s South Island. It is separated from the mainland by Foveaux Straight, 75 nautical miles of often gale swept open ocean.

Stewart is an unpopulated, remote, wild and beautiful part of New Zealand. At 47 degrees south latitude it is solidly in the Roaring Forties and close to the Furious Fifties. It can be a harsh and unforgiving place but there is plenty of calm manageable weather year round.

The island is largely managed by NZ’s Department of Conservation but the main settlement of Oban in Patterson Inlet has full tourist facilities and daily ferry service from Bluff on the mainland. There is also plane service.

The island is a mecca for hikers, hunters and boaters. It is a great cruising ground for yachties with 3 large sheltered and beautiful bays along the east coast plus a significant navigable river.

Its past human history includes sealing, whaling, fishing, tin mining, shipbuilding and logging. However, today there are few signs of human impact. Instead you will have a feeling of vast wild expanses untouched by humans. It looks like it did to the first explorers.

Stewart is well worth a visit with its extensive bush, granite hills, beaches and rock bound coast lines.

I do consider all of the ideas you have introduced in your post.
They are very convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless,
the posts are very brief for novices. Can you just expand them a bit in the future?
    Thanks for the post.ReplyCancel

    • Good input. I’m trying to be somewhat general at this point to encourage and support people to look at various photo techniques and it is almost impossible to get it right for both novices and more experienced people. I will certainly think about more in depth posts for the future.
Remember if you want more in depth info. on any specific topic; Adobe help on the internet as a starting point has tons of data. And if that does not get you answers an internet search will probably give you more to look at than you bargained for.ReplyCancel
